2018: A YEAR IN REVIEW

Reflecting on 2018, it’s clear that Bojangles’® has continued its legacy of success, with many accomplishments, including an acquisition, exciting new partnerships and innovative business and menu updates.

“We believe our back–to–basics strategy of operating ‘well-run restaurants’ is elevating customer perceptions of Bojangles’®,” Bojangles’® Interim President and CEO Randy Kibler said in the company’s third quarter earnings release. “We are enhancing customers’ total brand experience through staffing and training initiatives, improving speed of service at the drive-thru, promoting high-quality signature menu items with value messaging, and building out our technological capabilities to support the use of our new mobile app and delivery test.”

And, industry analysts and experts are noticing Bojangles’® success — the brand won multiple awards throughout 2018 including ranking 57th in Entrepreneur’s 2018 Franchise 500 Ranking and 29th in QSR’s Top 50. Additionally, Bojangles’® landed a cover story featuring Jeff Rigsby, representing the brand on the front page of Multi-Unit Franchisee.

Bojangles’® industry awards are echoed by foodies everywhere: this summer, Eater featured Bojangles’ in their ‘Cult Following’ video titled, “Why Is the South Obsessed with Bojangles’ Fried Chicken?” Also, It’s a Southern Thing recently named our biscuits the best tasting in the South, “Best fast food biscuit? We put them to the test.

Here are some of the big wins for Bojangles’® in 2018:

Growing Partnerships

Bojangles’® achieved new milestones this year by forming long-lasting partnerships that have helped the brand connect with many of the communities it serves.

Over Labor Day, Bojangles’® was the title sponsor for the Bojangles’® Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Additionally, we sponsored Derrike Cope to reunite for a one-race throwback special in honor of his 1993 partnership with Bojangles’®.

“I am truly pleased and thankful to be back with Bojangles’® 25 years later! My relationship with Bojangles’® and the people that were there in 1993 is incredible,” said Cope.

Bojangles’® and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) recently announced a new 10-year, $2.85 million agreement for naming rights to the Bojangles’® Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium campus. The campus will be known as the Bojangles’ Entertainment Complex beginning in early January 2019.

This agreement comes as construction of a connector facility between Bojangles’® Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium begins development to enhance the experience for fans. The new connector facility will allow a walkway between the historic venues, space for hospitality, new offices and storage, as well as more concessions and public restrooms. The facility is expected to open in fall 2019.

“Charlotte means a lot to us at Bojangles’®. It’s where we started and where thousands of our team members and their families live and work. We’re thrilled to remain a part of the Eastside community and to continue our partnership with CRVA at this new level,” said Randy Poindexter, senior vice president of marketing for Bojangles’.

New Deals and Expansions

In 2018, the franchise development team was hard at work expanding the Bojangles’® brand. Throughout the year, four new company restaurants opened alongside 12 franchise locations. Two of the new franchise locations were opened by new Bojangles’® franchisees.

The first location opened in Mobile, Alabama in early August to Sunny Patel, who plans to build and open multiple locations in southern Alabama and southeast Mississippi over the next several years.

The second new franchise location opened in St. Augustine, Florida by brothers Thad and Sage Joiner, who have many years of experience in restaurant management and operations.  They plan to bring multiple Bojangles’® restaurants to the northeast Florida region in the next several years, including a new Jacksonville location in 2019.

Customer Perks

Bojangles’® passionate customers were introduced to several unique marketing initiatives in 2018.

For the first time ever, Bojangles’® redesigned their Big Bo Box in July ahead of the Carolina Panthers’ 2018-2019 season. The new Carolina Panthers Big Bo Box showcases the iconic Bojangles’ brand in the Carolina Panthers’ blue, black and white colors, as well as the panther head logo.

“Bojangles’® is one of the Carolina Panthers’ biggest fans, and we’re fired up to show our support for the home team through this newly-designed Big Bo Box,” said Poindexter.

The brand has served as the Official Tailgate Headquarters and Sweet Tea of the Carolina Panthers since the team’s inception in 1995.

Looking ahead to 2019, Bojangles’® announced the 2019 Bojangles’® Barnyard Calendar. The calendar features imagery of cuddly barnyard animals as well as 12 discount coupons – one per month – for Bojangles’® food. The calendar is available for printing and will be sent directly to your inbox each month.

Bojangles’® of The Future

Since its introduction in early 2017, Bojangles’® ‘Building of the Future’ has gained popularity among our customers. Since the first location in Greenville, South Carolina, was introduced, 16 company locations have adopted the new design concept throughout the Southeast, with 30 company locations planning to remodel in 2019. Many franchise locations have also been renovated to include new Building of the Future elements, which has given the brand a more modern look across our core markets.

“This is just the beginning,” said Randy Icard, Bojangles’® interim vice president of franchise operations. “Our new concept showcases Bojangles’® commitment to the guest experience and to operational excellence. It’s an excellent indicator to our franchise system that we are looking forward, always focused on improvement and innovation.”

The new design has enhanced the consumer experience, while allowing our restaurants to run at top efficiency. The restaurants have been transformed with a sleek, modern design, featuring all-new interior, furniture and lighting, while holding the new layout and model to the same high standards that customers have come to expect over the years.

The design also displays Bojangles’® popular menu items in unique and innovative ways. Upon entering the new store, customers will notice brightly-colored crocks containing Bojangles’® home-style fixin’s and an array of vibrant signs highlighting Bojangles’® chicken and biscuits. The ‘Biscuit Theater’ completes the design, with customers able to witness the talents of Bojangles’® Biscuit Makers making biscuits from scratch every 20 minutes.
